Ph.D. Topic: Inorganic carbon cycling through U.S. Midwestern agro-ecosystems’ soil, groundwater, gases, and decision-making

My research traces the fate of inorganic carbon in row crop soils in the form of either crushed lime (calcium carbonate) to buffer soil pH or as bicarbonate naturally dissolved in groundwater used for irrigation.  I'm measuring how much of these carbonates act as a source of CO2 to the atmosphere vs. a sink that keeps additional CO2 out of the atmosphere.  I also work with local corn growers to understand how they make decisions about liming and groundwater irrigation, and I've provided them with water quality results for their groundwater wells.
