An application for internships, jobs, or graduate schools usually includes at least one recommendation from someone who knows you well enough to comment on your academic abilities and/or skills. The institution may request a recommendation in the form of a letter or to communicate directly with the recommender via phone or email.
Check in advance to see if your potential recommender is comfortable making a recommendation for you. If the answer is yes, provide the recommender:
- Cover letter or personal statement
- Job or internship posting(s) so the recommendation letter can address relevant points
- Contact information for the position
- Written permission if you want your recommender to comment upon information from your educational records such as grades, GPA, etc.
Send a thank you note to your recommender once you have submitted your materials for that job or internship.
