Dow STEM Peer Mentor


The Dow STEM Scholars Program Peer Mentor position offers exceptional STEM students the opportunity to be both campus leaders and mentors to students participating in the Dow STEM Scholars Program. Peer Mentors are committed to helping Dow STEM Scholars adjust to life at MSU and navigate the difficult STEM education journey.

In addition to meeting one-on-one with their assigned students (weekly) to discuss academic, social, and personal matters, mentors organize individual/group study tables with their students, plan monthly programming activities, and participate as ambassadors for all Dow STEM Scholars activities.

The position will begin in the Fall 2018, with a mandatory training session prior (week before classes) to the beginning of the semester. All hired mentors will be required to attend this paid training session, prior to starting employment.

Pay will be $10 per hour with an average workweek of 8-12 hours.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Meet weekly with mentees and completing a required contact log.
  • Meet individually with the Dow STEM Scholars Staff to discuss student concerns, as needed.

  • Coordinate and facilitate social and educational programs/presentations as desired or needed.

  • Provide mentees academic coaching/tutoring in the major academic subject area.

  • Attend bi-monthly staff meetings with program leadership team to discuss upcoming calendar, student activities, student performance, and other program-related matters.

  • Act as an on-campus resource for mentees by providing Dow Scholars students assistance in transitioning and becoming acclimated to MSU Services and resources.

  • Participate in required Dow STEM Scholars activities and programs, perform duties as assigned.

  • Actively participate in social media interactions (Facebook, Twitter) with Dow STEM students during the semester.

  • Serve as a positive social and academic role-model for program participants.

  • Perform other duties as assigned by Dow STEM Scholars staff or leadership team


  • Full-time Michigan State University, East Lansing undergraduate upper-level student. Current Dow STEM Sophomore Scholars are encouraged to apply as a Dow Buddy.
  • A GPA of at least a 3.0, in a recognized STEM degree program of study.

  • Ability to work 8-12 hours per week for the full academic year (Fall 2018/Spring 2019).

  • Ability to work with and communicate with diverse student populations.

  • Organized and committed to performing at a high-quality level of customer service

  • Experience in tutoring, coaching or teaching, preferred but not required.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion with the shared student and program information.

  • A positive attitude and passion for helping people succeed in achieving academic & career goals.

  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with limited supervision.
