Landis Lab Undergraduate Positions


The Landscape Ecology and Biological Control Lab is seeking applicants for several campus-based, full-time summer research assistant positions. Hours will be long during peak season. Applicants must be prepared to work outdoors, in all weather conditions, with team members or alone, must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to drive 1-3 hours to field sites in university vehicles. These jobs are not likely to be compatible with taking summer classes. Wages are based on experience but start at $11/hr. Full time (May-August, possible part-time during the school year) with multiple year commitment encouraged, but not required. Students with coursework, experience or career plans in ecology, agroecology, zoology, wildlife, entomology or plant sciences and insect or plant identification skills are preferred.

Impacts of Bioenergy Crops on Beneficial Insects As part of the Great Lakes

Bioenergy Research Center, we are investigating the potential impacts of bioenergy crops on beneficial insects (pollinators, parasitoids, and predators). This project will involve travel to various locations across Michigan; we will likely focus our efforts on setting up field experiments, measuring pollination and predation, and collecting insects. Work in the lab will focus on sorting and identifying the insects we collect in the field and on data entry. Competitive applicants will have some experience working in the field and identifying insects, but any motivated student with a biology background and an interest in insects should apply!

Monarch Breeding Ecology and Conservation

This project investigates how monarch breeding habitat in our region is related to monarch butterfly population outcomes. Specifically, this summer we will be looking at effects of ants and egg and larva density on monarch production in grasslands in lower Michigan. The project will involve driving to fields sites around southern Michigan, long days of field work, caring for a colony of monarchs on campus, and potentially some insect lab experiments. Insect identification skills and experience doing research are a plus, but all students with a biology background who are excited about insects and field work are encouraged to apply!
