Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Opportunity with Brudvig Lab

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) opportunity: Prairie restoration and community ecology with the Brudvig Lab at Michigan State University.

We have an opening for an undergraduate student to conduct research within restored tallgrass prairies in Michigan during the summer 2019 field season (~May - August). We will work with this student to develop and conduct a project related to the ecology or functioning of prairie ecosystems undergoing restoration from former agricultural lands.

A major goal of research in the Brudvig Lab is to understand the causes of variation in the outcomes of ecological restoration. To address this, the lab has been monitoring restored tallgrass prairies and conducted several large-scale restoration experiments in southwest Michigan. The REU student will have the opportunity to work within one or more of these study systems to pursue their own research. Potential projects might include how restoration affects bees or other arthropod taxa and the recovery of soil health following restoration.

This student will live near Michigan State's campus, in East Lansing, MI, and work closely with Lars Brudvig, postdoc Chris Catano, and graduate student Brandon Latorre. The student will also have opportunities to interact with other members of the Brudvig Lab and gain experience working on projects focused on the restoration of tallgrass prairies and oak savannas throughout southern Michigan.

This position is supported by the National Science Foundation’s Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program and the REU student will receive a stipend ($6000), an offset to living expenses ($600), and have their research and research-related travel expenses covered for the summer. We are interested in individuals at any stage of their undergraduate career, but REU students must be enrolled as undergraduates through at least August 2019 (i.e., can't be graduating in May 2019).

To apply, contact Lars Brudvig (brudvig@msu.edu) by Wednesday March 13, 2019 with a copy of your CV or resume, a brief (1 page max) statement of why you are interested in this REU opportunity, and the names and email addresses for two references who can speak to your potential as an REU student.
