Title: Animal Care Internship (paid)
Description:
The Saginaw Children’s Zoo is looking for individuals new to the zoo field who are interested in gaining practical, on-the-job experience caring for invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Under the mentorship of experienced animal care professionals, intern responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Daily husbandry of animals
- Evaluating animal welfare
- Preparing diets
- Record keeping
- Providing enrichment
- Public interaction and visitor engagement
- Assisting in veterinary procedures as assigned
A successful candidate for this position has a positive attitude, a teamwork-oriented mindset, a strong work ethic, is dependable, communicates well in both oral and written formats, and is interested in learning new skills.
This is a full-time (40 hr/week), paid position for six (6) months.
Experience: Unpaid experience OR less than one (1) year paid experience in an animal care setting. This position is intended to provide an introduction to a career as an animal care professional in an AZA-accredited institution. Individuals with more than one year of paid experience in an animal care setting will not be considered.
Position Requirements:
- Four-year college degree in related field
- Experience working on a team
- Effective communication skills, verbally & written.
- Computer competency and proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Ability to work on projects independently under direction
- Ability to manage time effectively
- Ability to work in inclement weather & difficult situations
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including holidays, weekends, evenings and emergency situations.
- Ability to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. on a regular basis
- Ability to work safely around allergens such as hay, straw, and grass
- Ability to follow all procedures, protocols and policies.
Salary: $11.16/hr
