About

As a former dog behaviorist at the SPCA of Texas, I evaluated shelter dogs behavior during their shelter stay. We try to alleviate kennel stress with daily enrichment (special dog toys such as buster cubes, Kongs, and puzzle toys). We also have special programs for high energy dogs such as C.L.A.S.S which stands for Canine Life and Sociability School. This training program helps these dogs develop "doggy manners" which make them more favorable for adoption. We also work on dogs who have food and toy aggression. Many shelters do not have the time to work on those two major issues in canines. Thanks to grateful donors we have the resources to help these animals find their forever home.

Also at the SPCA of Texas, I was an Animal Care Technician. I conducted health and behavior evaluations on dogs that have been surrendered to our facility. I drew blood and run blood work on them to determine whether they have FIV or Feline Leukemia (in felines) or advanced heartworms in canines. I also performed a behavior evaluation to determine whether this dog will be a good candidate for adoption.

I have been so blessed to work with a menagerie of animals from all walks of life. I love working with animals. If it wasn't for the amazing Zoology program at Michigan State University, I would never have found my calling in animal husbandry and behavior. I would like to thank Dr. Richard Snider for giving me the knowledge and courage to go after my dreams. I would also like to say a HUGE thank you to Susan Hill for introducing me to the Zoology major.

I have had the more amazing time and opportunities. I love how our major is so versatile! I absolutely love the behavior aspect of my job! It's also more amazing actually using my degree every day!

Now Ryshell is an Animal Services Officer I in the City of Piano.
